What is an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)?
For our purposes, they are non-military, unarmed, unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly referred to as “drones.” They can be airplane type (i.e. fixed wing), helicopter type (multi-rotor copters), or lighter than air type (aerostats), and typically carry light payloads of camera or metering equipment.
Does piloting a UAV require a certificate or training?
Training is not required, but highly recommended. Commercial-grade UAVs are far more sophisticated than remote-controlled airplanes/copters and cost up to tens of thousands of dollars, so a mistake can be costly.
What are the primary types of UAVs?
The most common types of UAVs include aerostats, fixed wing, and vertical take off and landing (VTOL) quad/multi rotor copters.
How is a UAV controlled?
UAVs are controlled via wireless communications using encryption that reduces spoofing or hijacking of UAV platforms. Additionally, autopilots can be programmed to fly a mission autonomously. The pilot can use either a traditional dual joystick type transmitter, First Person View goggles, or tablet type interfaces. LinkAV OFDM system’s serial channel can be used to transmit control signal & telemetry data.
What happens if the wireless communications fails?
The commercial grade UAVs have the ability to return to a pre-determined GPS location, or to return to the starting point of the mission.
What happens if the battery gets low?
Another failsafe mechanism auto-lands the UAV to prevent it from falling out of the sky.
Can UAVs be flown indoors?
Yes, just like full-size aircraft, size and type are related to application. There are many lightweight, smaller UAVs capable of safely flying indoors.
What is the flight time/endurance of a UAV?
Depending upon the type and size of UAV, its missions can last from 15 minutes to many hours.
What are some common sensors and cameras used on UAVs?
UAVs can carry imaging equipment to capture and record in both visible and non-visible spectrum (e.g., still, HD video, ultraviolet and infrared cameras). Additionally, non-imaging sensors can be used for atmospheric conditions (air pressure, temperature, humidity, etc.).
What is the quality of video and how is it transmitted?
UAVs are capable of recording High Definition (1920 x 1080) video for streaming download, or for capture and download at the end of the mission. LinkAV wireless COFDM/OFDM systems can transmit 1080p video up to 20-40km.
Are UAVs used for humanitarian reasons?
Absolutely. UAVs can be legally used for search-and-rescue missions, anti-poaching missions, wildlife preserve management, arctic mapping, and several other operations.
